Twitter reverted recent change, the ‘Latest Tweets’ default setting is back
So, what exactly is going on? Well, as things stand, when you open Twitter, you can see a star icon in the top-right corner. When you tap that, you can choose between ‘Home’ and ‘Latest Tweets’ options. The option you choose remains your default option. Twitter wanted to change that. It announced the change for iOS, and said it’s coming to Android soon. The change would basically mean that it will show you the ‘Home’ timeline by default, and let you switch to the latest tweets by swiping. Those two options would be shown in form of tabs at the top. This managed to get users to voice out their displeasure, as not only would it add an unnecessary element to the UI (tabbed view), but it wouldn’t allow them to have a default setting they prefer. Many people use Twitter with the ‘Latest Tweets’ option for their timeline.
It took Twitter only a couple of days to realize it made a mistake
It took Twitter a couple of days to realize it did something wrong. Its ‘Twitter Support’ handle announced that they’re switching the timeline back on iOS, while the change never made it to Android. Twitter said that users were simply overwhelming, and that their voices couldn’t be ignored. Twitter said that it “removed the tabbed experience for now”, but it did add that it will “explore other options”. Many users would say that other options are completely unnecessary in this regard, as things work as they should. Facebook forced its users to the algorithmic timeline a long time ago, and it reverted the change a while back, after it realize what it has done. I guess that the algorithmic view is in Twitter’s interest for several reasons, but it’s nice to see that the company listened to users. Let’s hope that Twitter won’t go down Facebook’s path at some point.
